Nota de la editora: Esta es la cuarta instalación de la serie fotográfica dedicada a nuestras abuelas. Cada mes publicamos fotos y texto escrito por los descendientes de nuestras matriarcas. Esta serie concluirá a fines del 2008, cuando se hará una exposición en la Biblioteca de Holyoke con todas las fotografías.

Mi madre Elsie Velásquez
Mujer práctica puertorriqueña
Puso todo su esmero
Al mandar a hacer a la medida
Un vestido rosa
Para la primera boda de una de sus hijas
A El Imperio y otras tiendas
De tela de hilo, mundillo y encajes
Al Viejo San Juan partió
En busca de materiales
Para un vestido rosa
Tan perfecto le quedó
Que cuando la segunda hija se casó
Mami, el mismo vestido rosa usó
Y a la tercera
Pues lo que es igual no es ventaja
Sin problema ninguno
El mismo vestido ella lució
A Puerto Rico el primer nieto
Fue de visita
¡Y qué perfecta ocasión!

¿Qué me pongo mami?
Bueno mi hija
Te presto mi vestido rosa.
The Pink Dress
Three daughters
Three weddings
One pink dress
My mother, Elsie Velázquez
A practical Puerto Rican woman
Put a lot of effort
In having a seamstress
Make her a pink dress
For the wedding of one of her daughters.
To El Imperio and other stores
Of Old San Juan she went
For linen, lace and mundillo
Materials for a pink dress
It turned out so perfectly
That for the second daughter’s wedding
The pink dress mother wore happily
And for the third daughter
All things being equal
Without a second thought
The same dress mother wore
To Puerto Rico the first grandson
For his first visit went
What a perfect occasion!
To take a photo of 4 generations
I have nothing to wear!
Well my daughter
I will lend you
My pink dress.
